Celebrating 25 Years of Excellence: Washington State University McNair Scholars Program


The Washington State University McNair Scholars Program proudly marked its 25th anniversary with an Open House on October 23rd, welcoming students, faculty, alumni, and community supporters to celebrate a quarter-century of dedication to empowering underrepresented, first-generation, and income-eligible students on their journey toward academic and professional success.

April Mendoza, REU/SROP Admittance 2024

Congratulations! April Mendoza Magana was accepted to the 2024 REU Program- EMERGE Biology Integration Institution with the University of Hampshire, which is fully funded. April will be heading to Abisko, Sweden this summer where they will conduct field work with how ecosystems are responding to climate change.

Jarely Aragón-Ramírez, Gilman Scholarship Award Winner

Congratulations McNair Student Jarely Aragon-Ramirez . Jarely received the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, which is a “federally funded initiative, and the top study abroad award in higher education”.  Jarely will be heading off to Japan to study for a semester this fall 2023. Read more HERE

McNair Scholars 2024 SURCA Award Winners

Our scholars took home 7 of the 49 Awards home this year. Congratulations, Scholars!

Zakora Moore and Areli Orozco received awards in the Research Proposal Category.
Tyrique Lewis, Mya Mackowsi, and Geselle Sotelo won awards in the Molecular, Cellular and Chemical Biology.
Akira Park won award in the Humanities category.
Sandy Tlachi-Munoz received award in the Social Sciences category.

McNair Scholar Sandy Tlachi-Muñoz Research Publication

Sandy Tlachi-Munoz, McNair Senior Scholar, published a research article in The Drug and Alcohol Review with her McNair Faculty mentor, Dr. Jessica Willoughby

The article is titled The impact of sexual scripts in brand-generated cannabis social media posts on sex-related cannabis expectancies: Does body appreciation moderate effects?
